Research and Development (R&D) Unit of Khwopa College of Engineering organized a presentation on “Mathematics in Civil Engineering” on the 21st of June, 2024. Lecturer Anusha Danegulu, a Department of Civil Engineering faculty member, delivered an insightful presentation. The presentation focused on applying different branches of mathematics to other aspects of civil engineering. The extensive use of calculus in fluid mechanics, hydraulics, and groundwater flow, use of probability distribution in flood hydrology and traffic studies, use of statistics in determining the characteristics strength of concrete, use of linear algebra in finite element analysis and other use cases of mathematics were put forward in the presentation for discussion among other faculty members from departments of Civil, Electrical and Computer Engineering.
During the discussion, Deputy Head of the Civil Department, Anand Kumar Mishra, put forward his insights on how uncertainties are addressed in the design of civil structures. Head of the Civil Department, Ramesh Bala, also put forward his insights on the extensive use of statistics in the transportation sector. The discussion session concluded with closing remarks from Prof. Dr. Raju Bhai Tyata and Prof. Dr. Chandra Kiran Kawan, respective heads of the R&D Unit and the Department of Science and Humanities, with the conclusion being how mathematics is an integral part of engineering and how a practical teaching-learning approach can be devised by presenting these use cases while teaching mathematics to civil engineering students.
