Civil Department facilitated an outreach program organized by Smartphone for Water (S4W-Nepal) for their “Monsoon Expedition – 2024” on the 7th of June. To collect hydrometeorological data from the onset to the withdrawal of this monsoon season using the citizen science approach, S4W-Nepal conducted an outreach program targeting civil engineering students of Khwopa College of Engineering, currently studying in the fifth semester. The outreach program included a session with two presentations, one from Dr. Sanjiv Neupane (Chief Executive Officer, S4W-Nepal) and another from Mr. Sudeep Duwal (Research Associate, S4W-Nepal). Mr. Duwal discussed S4W-Nepal’s “Citizen Science-based Rainfall and Flood Monitoring” approach, previous works, and future targets. Meanwhile, Dr. Neupane shared his findings from his work “Mapping Groundwater Resilience to Climate Change and Human Development in Asian Cities,” focusing on his conclusions on Kathmandu Valley. The program concluded with an interactive session where the team from S4W-Nepal collected information on students interested in the Monsoon Expedition, distributed rain gauges, and provided training on data collection.
