On May 18th, 2024, Sweta Suwal led a comprehensive session aimed at demystifying Git and GitHub for students from the BCT program's second, third, and fourth years. Held on Microsoft Teams, the session saw an impressive turnout with 66 attendees, exceeding the 44 registered participants, highlighting the high interest and demand for such training. The primary goal was to equip students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in Git and GitHub. Mastery of these tools is crucial for any aspiring software developer, as they are essential for version control, collaborative coding, and efficient project management.
The workshop began with an introduction to version control systems, emphasizing the importance of Git for tracking changes and managing code. Sweta walked the participants through essential Git commands like git init, git add, git commit, and git push, demonstrating their application in real-world scenarios. Transitioning to GitHub, the session covered creating repositories, cloning existing ones, and managing remote repositories. The participants were shown how to contribute to projects using branches and pull requests, highlighting GitHub's collaborative features. To keep the session engaging, Sweta incorporated interactive elements such as live coding examples and Q&A sessions. A quiz segment, "Git It Right!", added a playful yet educational twist, helping reinforce the concepts covered. Overall, the session was well-received. Participants appreciated the depth of knowledge and the practical demonstrations. However, feedback suggested that more hands-on exercises and real-time practice opportunities would enhance understanding and retention. Additionally, incorporating group discussions or breakout sessions could further boost engagement and participation.
