Talk program on the occasion of the 113th International Working Women's Day

    Published Date: 2023-03-09

On the occasion of the 113th International Worker Women's Day, a talk program was held on Falgun 24, 2079. The program was jointly organized by Khwopa Engineering College, Khwopa College of Engineering, and Khwopa Polytechnic Institute, run by the Bhaktapur Municipality. The chief guest of the program was a senior politician and chairman of the Nepal Workers and Peasants Party, Mr. Narayanman Bijukchhe (Rohit), who emphasized the need to develop Bhaktapur as a test tube for the country. Instead of giving answers to those who cultivate doubts and criticism, he motivates focusing on education, health, sanitation, and heritage conservation so they could personally visit and see the progress.

Chief guest Com. Rohit argues against the criticism of capitalist forces that women have not been brought into leadership roles. Despite the name of gender equality, women of the privileged class continue to dominate until 80 percent of the working-class people become aware of this. After widespread literacy campaigns and free education, equality will expand. The development of mechanization made it easier for women to work at home, and the arrangement of childcare facilities and women's shelters makes easy for women to survive from birth to death. When women are empowered intellectually and socially, they are not left behind, he clarified.

He further added that the practice of dowry should be declared illegal. Because the practice of dowry in Nepal and India's districts nearby Terai has caused great suffering to women, forcing some to commit suicide.

In the program, the chairman of educational institutions run by Bhaktapur Municipality and the Mayor of Bhaktapur Municipality, Sunil Prajapati, discussed the lack of equality in practice despite the existence of women's rights and equality in the constitution and laws. He discussed that while women of the rich classes have access to convenience and happiness, most poor women suffer within the country or go abroad for employment; they are used as a means of advertising and trading. He focused on issues related to women's liberation and equality that were not racial but class issues.

He also mentioned that, although the country's constitution and laws mandate affirmative action to ensure women's participation, women are not reaching real positions of power. He also noted that affirmative action reduces competitive spirit; thus, he suggested that education should be given top priority and that employment opportunities should be increased to empower women. He mentioned that besides the death penalty being imposed on rapists in India and life imprisonment with forfeiture of all property for rape in Nepal, incidents of rape are increasing mentioning that, on average, seven cases of rape are reported daily. Therefore, he emphasized that women needed to fight for their class liberation more than for so-called gender equality.

In another context, while discussing the advancement of the working class, he mentioned that the rulers with a feudal mentality have spread a lot of misconceptions about Bhaktapur, but efforts are being made to make Bhaktapur a center of knowledge.

During the program, Bagmati Province member Srijana Sainju remembered March 8 as an important milestone in the history of the struggle for women's rights, citing women's participation in important movements around the world. She also mentioned that the United Nations had declared ''International Working Women's Day'' as International Women's Day in 1949 to weaken the working women's movement. However, she focused on the fact that INGO and NGO donations to celebrate Women's Day are trying to overshadow the working women's movement. While discussing the participation of women in revolutions such as the Russian Revolution and the Cuban Revolution, she revealed that women's participation in policymaking was 23.8% worldwide, 19.8% in Asia, and 33% in Nepal. Despite this, it was noted that many women who come from wealthy backgrounds only seek personal benefits and remain silent about the rights of working women.

Discussing the double exploitation of female workers through the exploitation of the system and social exclusion, she clarifies that the Nepal Workers and Peasants Party has been alerting and organizing female workers through adult classes at night for four decades.  Working women were at the forefront of the struggle in "Bhaktapur Kanda" of 2045 B.S., just as their importance in wars around the world was highlighted. She strongly mentioned that it is the duty of women workers to fight against women's double exploitation.

In the program, while discussing the importance of International Women's Day, Principal of Khwopa Engineering College, Er. Sujan Maka, presented the fact that the number of female students has increased among the students studying at the college.

In the program, the Principal of Khwopa College of Engineering, Er. Sunil Duwal, discussed that holding meetings, conferences, and seminars in hotels and resorts will not lead to the liberation of women and that the liberation of poor and working women is not possible only with the participation of women in high-ranking positions in the country. Thus, he discussed the need to establish the women's freedom and equality movement as part of an awareness campaign for a socialist movement.

Dr. Ratnasundar Lasiwa, Principal of Khwopa Polytechnic Institute, discussed various aspects of communicable and non-communicable diseases, with an emphasis on the 365-day OPD medical services provided by Khwopa Hospital, run by Bhaktapur Municipality.

Er. Ratnashova Prajapati, Vice-Principal of Khwopa College of Engineering, chaired the program and presented the biography of the leading international worker women's movement figure, Clara Zetkin. Er. Sunita Kharbuja also shared her thoughts about the day. Additionally, Ms. Ravina Suwal, a teacher at Khwopa Polytechnic, presented and discussed cervical cancer.
