The Department of Computer Engineering at Khwopa College of Engineering successfully organized a one-day talk program on June 14, 2023. The event focused on the topic of "NPIX local exchange, ISP working mechanisms, and CDN in Nepal." The program was specifically tailored for 3rd and 4th-year undergraduate students of computer engineering, aiming to provide practical insights into Nepal's network infrastructure and state-of-the-art technologies.
The talk was delivered by the guest speaker Er. Ajay Maharjan, a network engineer at Vianet Communication Ltd. He began with an introduction to the Internet and its history in Nepal. Mr. Maharjan discussed various types of Internet Service Providers (ISPs) that have been prevalent over the years. He elaborated on dial-up Internet Providers, which are now obsolete, and DSL Providers, which are widely used at present. Additionally, he introduced satellite Internet Providers. He explained the working principles of ISPs, their different tiers, and the current state-of-the-art equipment used by ISPs in Nepal. Notably, he highlighted the deployment of EPON, GPON, XGPON, and XGSPON technologies by ISPs in the country.
Furthermore, the speaker shed light on the significance of the Nepal Internet Exchange (NPIX), which was established in 2002 AD. He discussed the policies and advantages that NPIX provides to customers of its member ISPs and discussed Content Delivery Networks (CDNs), a technology that is being implemented in other developed countries. However, it is still in progress for adoption in Nepal. He emphasized the potential benefits for internet users in terms of improved availability, faster performance, reduced costs, and enhanced website security with the implementation of CDNs. In conclusion, he provided insights into career opportunities for students interested in the network field.
The talk program witnessed the presence of approximately 96 students, including faculty members such as Mr. Dinesh Ghemosu, Mrs. Subhadra Joshi, Mr. Mukesh Kumar Kafle, and Mr. Mensun Lakhemaru. Er. Dinesh Gothe, the Head of the Computer Department, delivered the concluding remarks, expressing gratitude to the invited speaker and all attendees for their participation.
