Students from the 2nd year of the Electrical Engineering Department, Bigyan Kattel and Shristi Sharma, recently completed a 5-day internship at the NEA Transformer Workshop in Kharipati, Bhaktapur. Following the internship, they shared their learning and hands-on experience with their classmates through an insightful presentation on Wednesday, Jestha 7.
During the presentation, they elaborated on several technical procedures in which they were engaged during the internship. They described performing turn ratio tests, which are vital for confirming the transformer's voltage transformation accuracy. They also learned about transformer winding techniques and insulation procedures, which ensure electrical reliability and prevent dielectric failure. A key part of their hands-on training involved assembling transformer cores using laminated steel sheets to minimize eddy current losses. Furthermore, they conducted insulation resistance testing using a MEGGER to assess the health of the winding insulation. Additionally, they performed the DIMER test, a crucial diagnostic method for detecting moisture and contamination in transformer oil, which plays a vital role in insulation and cooling. These practical experiences provided them with valuable insights into real-world transformer diagnostics, assembly, and maintenance processes.
The presentation was attended by faculty members, including Er. Rakesh Gwachha, Head of the Electrical Department; Er. Shreeshuva Maharjan, Assistant Lecturer; Mr. Nischal Shrestha, Teaching Assistant; and Mr. Anil Bhatt, Teaching Assistant. After the session, Er. Maharjan shared valuable insights on the importance of such internships, emphasizing how practical training bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world applications in the field of electrical engineering.
The students were supported by experienced engineers throughout the internship, gaining valuable hands-on insights. This reflects college’s strong ties with the electrical engineering industry, helping bridge the gap between classroom learning and practical application.
