Honorable Ammar Bahadur Thapa, Chairperson of the Education, Health, and Information Technology Committee under the House of Representatives, along with his team, was warmly welcomed to Khwopa College of Engineering during an on-site inspection of 108 ropanis of land located in Sallaghari, Bhaktapur Ward No. 1 on Sunday, 6th of Ashoj, 2081. This land has been earmarked for the establishment of Khwopa University.
Chairperson Thapa expressed his gratitude for the warm reception and the opportunity to closely observe the developments in Bhaktapur. He assured attendees that once the University Bill is presented to the Education, Health, and Information Technology Committee, it will be thoroughly discussed, and necessary issues will be raised before presenting it to Parliament soon.
Chairperson Thapa also acknowledged the commendable facilities provided to students from outside the Kathmandu Valley who study at the colleges operated by Bhaktapur Municipality. He mentioned the excitement among committee members about Khwopa University offering MBBS programs at affordable fees, which aligns with the institution's goal of providing accessible education.
Addressing concerns over the delays in finalizing Khwopa University’s establishment, Chairperson Thapa affirmed his support for the swift passage of the Khwopa University Bill. He emphasized that the university is aimed at delivering accessible, high-quality higher education to the citizens of Nepal.
Honorable Prem Suwal, Secretary and Member of Parliament from the Nepal Workers and Peasants' Party, reiterated Bhaktapur Municipality’s longstanding request for the passage of the Khwopa University Bill in Parliament. He also called for the acquisition of the 108 ropani land in Sallaghari, currently under Nepal Trust, to Bhaktapur Municipality to establish the university.
Suwal emphasized that the land in Sallaghari belongs to the local people, and Khwopa University will serve as a "people’s university." He highlighted that this initiative will provide students from across the nation with the opportunity to pursue quality higher education at affordable rates.
Bhaktapur Mayor Mr. Sunil Prajapati echoed the call for the swift approval of the Khwopa University Bill and the transfer of the 108 ropani Sallaghari land. He pointed out that the area has suffered erosion and encroachment by the Hanumante River due to inadequate protection, which has resulted in a shrinking land area and an increased risk of misuse.
Mayor Prajapati informed attendees that Bhaktapur Municipality, with Nepal Trust’s consent, has been safeguarding the Sallaghari land by building a boundary wall and installing five gates, funded by the municipality. He also highlighted Bhaktapur Municipality's continuous commitment to education, including providing over NRs. 40 million in annual scholarships, offering educational loans, operating childcare services, and managing libraries at ward and city levels.
Additionally, Prajapati urged the Government of Nepal to take necessary actions to establish Khwopa University along with an Institute of Medical Sciences, to provide affordable medical education. He also shared that more than 7,000 students from all 77 districts of Nepal are currently studying in educational institutions run by Bhaktapur Municipality, and a total of 41,798 students have enrolled since the colleges were founded.
Former Minister of Education, Devendra Poudel, praised Bhaktapur Municipality for its exemplary work in the education sector, stating that its efforts should serve as a model for all 753 local levels in Nepal. He expressed his commitment to support the establishment of Khwopa University, which aims to provide affordable and high-quality education for the people.
Poudel highlighted that Bhaktapur Municipality has made significant strides in building the necessary physical infrastructure to operate Khwopa University and affirmed that the municipality is fully capable of running the institution effectively.
During the visit, the principals of Khwopa Engineering College, Er. Sujan Maka, and Khwopa College of Engineering, Er. Sunil Duwal, welcomed the delegation led by Chairperson Ammar Bahadur Thapa of the Education, Health, and Information Technology Committee. They provided detailed information about the colleges, including the purpose behind their establishment, educational programs, student enrollment, fee structures, and the various services and facilities available to students.
The visiting team included Chairperson Ammar Bahadur Thapa, Hon. Devendra Poudel, Hon. Urmila Thebe, Hon. Ram Prakash Chaudhary, Hon. Liladevi Bokhim, Hon. Binita Kumari Singh, Hon. Gyanudevi Subedi, Committee Secretary Dasharath Dhamala, Deputy Secretary Pushpaprakash Khanal, and Branch Officer Yamuna Subedi. They were given a comprehensive overview of the educational initiatives in Bhaktapur, underscoring the municipality's commitment to the advancement of education in Nepal.
